Title: Understanding Carbon Cycle in the Earth System via Information Science and Technology

Abstract:

Carbon cycle in the earth system is crucial for the origin and evolution of life, habitability of planets, and the working mechanism in the Earth's inteior. In the past several decades, chemical data of carbon in the earth system has been growing exponentially. Thus, it is crucial to bring information science and technology in geoscience to push the scientific question forward. Here at school of earth sciences in ZJU, we collaborate with data scientists, computer scientists and two hundred undergraduate/graduate students around the world to explore the geoscience questions, including carbon cycle, using internet worms, algorithms and cloud computation. The collatorative team work reveals new insights in the old geoscience questions.
